“Why would you hire a car if you just going to drive to the hotel?”… said a little boy who seems to understand adventure better than I do.
The truth is I’m that person who lives in a bubble. The one who is always scared to explore… and now being a mom with 2 kids, I’ve shut myself off from the world.
My weekends are spent behind closed doors changing dirty diapers while entertaining kids with only 4 hours of sleep… and I planned on doing the exact same thing during the December holidays. I was scared that I would not be able to cope with 2 kids in public but now I’ve realised that if I stay at home and do nothing, it will get worse. I will be irritable and so will my kids.
I’m being selfish to my daughter who is a little explorer, just like her dad and I’m being selfish to my husband who worked hard during the entire year and deserves a little vacation. My husband is the type of person that will jump in his car, “dump the GPS” and drive… until he finds something interesting to do.
The child in this video echoed the words I needed to hear…“Make every minute count”.
Holidays are not just about travelling from A to B or staying at a fancy hotel.
It’s about creating memories with the people you love.
It’s about getting sand in your toes and laughing hysterically with your child.
It’s about eating ice cream in the sun and getting your hands all sticky.
Today I want you to think about your holiday plans and the itinerary that you had scheduled. SCRAP IT. Because Adventure doesn’t need to be planned. Your child doesn’t need to visit every play centre in the area.
Pause. And think about those moments that will mean more to your child.
Choose to sit in your car and visit a place that you have never visited before.
Choose to explore with your kids and rekindle the romance with your husband.
Choose to make every minute count before your children grow up and you regret not creating enough memories with them.
Mom, YOU deserve a Holiday – even with a newborn and a toddler.
This December holiday, let Bidvest Car Rental take care of your travelling arrangements.
Do the unexpected. Instead of driving 6 hours to your destination – Hop on a plane and hire a car. Open the window, feel the breeze and enjoy the ride.
I choose to spend more quality time with my family and travel on the roads that I haven’t travelled before.
I want to build sand castles with my daughter on the beach.
I want to share candle light dinners with my husband.
And I want to take afternoon walks with my newborn.
If you are not travelling long distance this December, why not plan a weekend away? South Africa is a beautiful country filled with small towns that has so much to offer.
Pack a bag, rent a car and go on a road trip! Sing festive songs (or nursery rhymes in my case) and stop for a picture. It’s time for you to make every minute count.
Share your favourite South African holiday/work destination on social media and the best suggestions will win a weekend car rental courtesy of Bidvest Car Rental. Don’t forget to use the tag #EveryMinuteCounts.
So this holiday, SMILE and celebrate the little things in life. It’s time for you to unwind just like the wise little man described in the video. 😉

You are so right. The kids are only little for so long, so we need to take the time and make the most of every single minute.
I have a 20-month old and a 3-year old and they both love to get out-and-about, even though sometimes I don’t feel like it. When we do get out and I see how much they’re enjoying themselves, I know I’ve made the right decision to get out of the house.
You are so right. I blinked and my baby turned four!
“Creating memories” is absolutely right! Enjoy your time with your family, girl!
