For many, the summer holiday season is a time for families to unwind, relax and celebrate time together, which usually involves an influx of social gatherings and activities. This change in routine can also lead to overindulgence which results in the challenge of reviving balanced lifestyle habits when the time for New Year’s resolutions comes around again.
To help strike a balance between enjoying the occasion and not overindulging, Nestlé South Africa shares its top holiday survival tips below.
-
Eat a small snack before heading out.
You’ve heard that you should never shop on an empty stomach but really you should never go anywhere on an empty stomach.
Nibbling on some juicy grapes or enjoying a small handful of unsalted nuts or a small packet of lean biltong, or even a glass of milk, will save you from grabbing something less favourable while out-and-about and waiting for your next meal.
In restaurants try not to fill yourself up on the bread before the meal – it adds unnecessary kilojoules and may lead to overeating.
-
Survey the spread and have a strategy.
If you find yourself at a dinner/lunch party, chances are high that you will be confronted by an array of rich and delicious food. To avoid having a plate piled high with every available option, hold back and observe what is on offer.
Before dishing up, have a clear idea of what you will be eating and be conscious that your plate should ideally contain ½ vegetables, ¼ protein and ¼ starches or grains. We also have a psychological need to fill our plates – if possible opt for a side plate serving and go back for seconds only if you’re still peckish later.
-
Enjoy a treat, adjust a meal.
It’s okay to indulge a bit when on holiday – but If you do have a treat, balance it out with your usual snack or eat a smaller meal at lunch or dinner.
All treats can be enjoyed in moderation, especially if you lead an active lifestyle, so round up the troops and set out on an afternoon stroll after lunch.
-
Drink Responsibly.
Before you sit back and enjoy a cold beer, sip on a glass of wine or gulp down an ice-cold cool drink, consider that there can be just as many kilojoules in what we drink as there are in what we eat.
Diluting fruit juices or wine with soda water and lots of ice can create refreshing alternatives while lowering the kilojoule content.
-
Have fun.
Holidays are the perfect time to enjoy fun activities with your family and friends as it strengthens bonds and creates fond memories.
An added bonus is that activities also serve as great distractions from tempting snack options and can help you get up and move more, getting rid of extra energy consumed throughout the day.
