Staycation at Protea Hotel by Marriott Hunters Rest

Are you looking for a weekend break – a place to escape from the hustle and bustle of the rat race, but somewhere close enough that you do not have to spend hours on the road …

Well, I may have just discovered what you are looking for ….

My family and I were invited for a weekend away at Protea Hotel by Marriott Hunters Rest. I must admit I honestly expected it to be boring. Like what can one really do in Rustenburg? (No offense).

It was the opposite! I was surprised at how many activities there were for the kids at the hotel and around the area.

If you really want, you don’t even need to leave your hotel but trust me, you want to.

Did you know Protea Hotel by Marriott Hunters Rest is only an hour away from Johannesburg?

Nestled between the Magaliesberg Mountains and the Kgaswane Nature Reserve; making it the ideal hotel for an outdoor adventure escape and a great spot for some good photos! ????

First impressions:

The hotel is beautiful, welcoming and has a bit of that homely feel. There are self-catering units available if you would like to cook or have a braai with family which is a bonus if you have fussy kids like mine.

I’ve been to several hotels over the years and I must say this hotel has great service overall. From friendly staff members, well-maintained property to a variety of cuisines available at the buffet (theme nights) that tries to accommodate almost everyone.

Our room:

Our room was spacious and worked well for my big family!

  • King bed in the main room.
  • A separate toilet and bathroom.
  • A bathtub and a huge shower!
  • Free Wi-Fi

Highlight in our room:

What impressed me the most was the bunk bed for the kids (it made them feel like they were at home) and a little modern kitchen for you to cook.

The facilities at the hotel:

  • Golf course
  • Heated swimming pool
  • Spa
  • Putt-putt
  • Viewing deck
  • Fitness centre
  • Kids play area
  • Riding bicycles
  • Arts and crafts
  • Jumping castle

My kids had hours of fun at the kids’ play area.

The highlight of my stay?

I went there to take a break from work and bond with my kids and that is exactly what I did. We didn’t do much and spent a lot of time at the hotel, but it was a good relaxing weekend!

The hot chocolate drinks and seafood buffet are a must-try. The buffet is definitely worth the price.

Something interesting:

Marriot allows you to check-in via the mobile app at some hotels. You will receive alerts when your room is ready, you can chat with your hotel and more.

What can you do around the area?

  • Enjoy panoramic views of Olifantsnek dam and Magaliesberg mountains from the hotel’s viewing deck
  • Magaliesberg Canopy tours offer a great experience to nature and adrenaline lovers
  • A variety of craft beer brewers in the area will delight any beer connoisseur or novice alike
  • Akwaaba Predator Park
  • Chi-Chi’s Playpark for the kids
  • Ten Flags Theme Park
  • Excalibur Boutique Hotel
