Why you should consider testing your Omega-3 DHA levels in your breast milk…

This post was sponsored by Salveo and is about Omega-3 during breastfeeding.

To be honest, I did not know that testing your Omega-3 DHA levels in your breast milk was even possible but it is – thanks to the MyMilk test from Ecsponent Biotech in South Africa.

The MyMilk test is available via the Ecsponent Biotech website for R570 incl VAT.

Now the big question is, why do I need to test my Omega-3 DHA levels in my breast milk?

Many studies suggest that omega-3s may provide some benefits to a wide range of diseases: cancer, asthma, depression, cardiovascular disease, ADHD, and autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis. Elevated DHA-levels are also linked to a reduced likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, and other cognitive abnormalities.

The benefits of having adequate levels of DHA during pregnancy and after birth can also help improve a decrease in food allergies and eczema.

I did not test my Omega-3 DHA levels in my breast milk before – because I didn’t see a need to! I am however very curious about the results – especially since my first-born has allergies and my second-born had eczema during the first year of his life.

I did not realize how important this test could be for me and for my kids.

We all know about the importance of Omega-3 during pregnancy – perhaps because it is stressed by professionals – but no one talks about what you need to do after birth, and especially during breastfeeding. There are tons of information available on the internet but this can be quite overwhelming especially for a first-time mom.new prodcut launches

I am now breastfeeding my toddler and newborn. The truth is that it is exhausting but I wouldn’t change it. I love the moments that we share during a feed, and I have peace of mind knowing that I am giving them the best that I can in order to build up their immune system. I also know that my diet isn’t the best right now – and this is perhaps my biggest reason for wanting to do the test.

Breast milk is like golden juice for our little ones. It has a near perfect mix of vitamins, fats, proteins, and nutrients for the baby.

Did you know?

After birth, your baby will still be dependent on your omega-3 DHA intake for growth and development if you breastfeed.

During this time, synaptic connections in the brain are made at a furious rate and both you and baby will need an additional intake of DHA.

Why should you consider the MyMilk test?

Measuring the Omega-3 DHA in your breast milk can help you know if your current diet is ideal and will guide you on what can be done for improvement.

How does it work?

The MyMilk test can be done in the comfort of your own home.

It literally takes you less than 8 minutes to do and all you need is a large drop of breast milk.

Once you purchase your kit, you can open it and read the instructions.

You will be given the following:

  • A test requisition form to fill out.
  • A collection card for your breast milk sample.
  • Courier and zip-lock bag to send the test sample in.

How to use the MyMilk kit?

  • Read instructions carefully.
  • Call the lab to request collection of your test.
  • Wash your hands.
  • Take the test – You need to center the breast flanges on the nipple and gently squeeze for a large drop of milk to come out. Absorb the drop(s) in the circle on the filter paper provided.
  • Air-Dry the sample and then place the sample card back in the zip-lock bag provided and get it ready for dispatch.
  • The test will then be collected by Ecsponent Biotech affiliated courier service for analyzing and you can expect your results within 7 days.

The test results are confidential.

Your sample will be processed under strict quality control and adherence to the protocols of the international accreditation for medical laboratories.
